In-store sales still dominate in retail, but a significant percentage of sales are digital. Cross-channel sales account for 23% of consumer activity, and it has dramatically increased in the past two years as consumers emerged from pandemic lockdowns and returned to retail outlets. Three-quarters of the surveyed merchants claim to have or are considering implementing a universal commerce strategy, and larger merchants are ahead of midsize merchants in terms of implementation.
This report informs U.S. merchants and the companies that support them about the value and challenges that universal commerce delivers. It is derived from a Datos Insights survey conducted in Q4 2023 and Q1 2024 of 1,000 midsize and large U.S. merchants with online and physical store operations.
