Nearly 220,000 terminals were delivered worldwide in 2025, with deployment diversifying across convenience, pharmacy and speciality retail
Self-checkout market rebounds with demand soaring in EMEA countries
The latest Global EPOS and Self-Checkout research by Datos Insights reveals that self-checkout shipments reached the second highest level on record in 2025.
Activity surged in the EMEA region as major supermarket chains rolled out to new stores and refreshed older hardware on a massive scale. Discounters Lidl and Kaufland led the charge with their ongoing, pan-European rollouts, while the UK’s Morrisons, France’s Coopérative U, and Turkey’s Migros are among the domestic grocery giants also investing heavily in self-service.

An ever-wider variety of non-food retailers are also embracing the technology, with regional rollouts by the likes of pharmacy chain Rossmann and fashion firm Kiabi, as well as an abundance of projects by local brands – from Ukrainian variety chain Avrora, to Israeli discounter Max Stock, to South African clothing retailer UNIQ.
Asia and the Americas see strong activity in both developed and emerging markets
Demand remained high across the world’s largest markets in 2025. The US market recovered following a contraction in the previous year, with advancements in AI-powered loss prevention solutions encouraging grocery and big-box firms to re-invest. The year also saw rollouts by leading grocery, department store, fashion and discount variety chains in Brazil, and pilots by convenience giants OXXO and 7-Eleven in Mexico.
Meanwhile, there were large-scale projects by supermarket chains in emerging markets across both regions, such as in Indonesia and Thailand, and in Panama and Uruguay.
Expanding vendor landscape serves ever-wider range of retailers
Global, regional, and local players are all capitalising on emerging opportunities as self-checkout adoption rises across the world.
NCR Voyix is the largest supplier, accounting for more than a quarter of global shipments in 2025. Customers include major US big-box, convenience and DIY brands, as well as supermarket chains such as Publix. The vendor also delivered to major firms in EMEA, including in the UK, the Nordics, and Turkey. Diebold Nixdorf, the second largest, also has a global footprint – with its solutions deployed by pharmacy chains such as Rossmann, in addition to grocery, furniture and fashion retailers.
Meanwhile, numerous firms are expanding their regional footprint. Swiss vendor 4POS and Dutch sister company Pan Oston deliver to major discounters and drugstores across Europe, while Toshiba supplies key grocery clients in both APAC and the Americas. HiStone has a growing presence outside its home market, delivering to supermarkets in Latin America – as do fellow Chinese firms Wintec and CCL Technology, which count European grocery and speciality retailers among their customers.
Competition is continuing to ratchet up, with new players entering countries as diverse as Belgium, Brazil and South Korea in 2025, delivering to major clients ranging from convenience chains to department stores.
Strong long-term growth ahead as new markets open and technology advances
Global self-checkout installations are forecast to near 2.3 million by 2031, with growth expected in both mature and developing markets worldwide. Ongoing labour shortages and rising consumer expectations are set to sustain demand for the technology, while computer vision AI gives retailers powerful tools to combat shrinkage and RFID solutions enable greater penetration of self-checkout into the fashion sector.
Chris Allen, who led the research, commented: “The addressable market for self-checkout only continues to grow, with adoption accelerating in emerging markets and in new segments including convenience, pharmacy and fashion to name but a few.”
