Millennials are 46% of SMB decision-makers, yet Datos Insights’ Q1 2026 survey of SMBs finds only 4% of millennial-run SMBs bank primarily with a community bank, the smallest share of any age group. The Big 4 banks win these owners with fully digital account opening, instant debit card issuance, and immediate credit pre-approvals. Credit unions hold about 6% across Gen Z, millennials, and Gen X, but younger members have the lowest tolerance for product gaps.
Both institution types need to target businesses with US$1 million to US$5 million in revenue, the tier where community banks tend to lose their most valuable clients to larger competitors. Datos Insights finds that product breadth and relationship depth, not rates, win acquisition. Without added products, smaller financial institutions cede further ground among younger SMB decision-makers.
