POS Software Competition Intensifies as Retailers Pursue Operational Excellence

New research identifies more than 140 POS software suppliers working with the world’s largest retail and hospitality operators

Major chains accelerate in-house POS development

There were more than 450,000 new POS software installations globally in the year to June 2024, according to Global POS Software, the latest study from strategic research and consulting firm RBR Data Services, a division of Datos Insights.

The world’s largest retail and hospitality chains are installing more in-store touchpoints, expanding their store networks and adopting brand-new applications in the pursuit of operational excellence. Many are developing proprietary solutions for their businesses, representing an increasing share of new installations. Fast-food giant Yum! Brands has rolled out its proprietary Poseidon POS solution across US Taco Bell restaurants and is expanding to US KFC outlets, while retailers Walmart and Uniqlo advance their in-house software deployment.

Key findings:

  • NCR Voyix is the largest supplier of new POS software deployments worldwide, with an 11% market share, leading in the Americas and western Europe. Major customers include supermarkets, fuel convenience chains, and fast-food firms such as UK’s Asda.
  • GK Software has moved into second place and leads in the grocery sector owing to a rollout at South African retail giant Shoprite. Further customers include expanding discount chain Lidl, which is introducing self-checkout in many countries including Germany.
  • Toshiba also saw its share rise, with a leading convenience chain in South Korea rolling out its solution. The supplier also has a strong position in Japan and Latin America, where customers include major convenience and supermarket banners.
  • Rounding out the five largest suppliers are Oracle and Heading. Oracle is the largest provider of new deployments to hospitality chains and has a significant presence at soft goods firms, while Heading supplies leading retailers in its home market China.

Diverse range of suppliers compete for new business

The global POS software market is highly fragmented and competitive. Other major suppliers include Flooid, owned by Glory, which has a strong position in the general merchandise segment, and Diebold Nixdorf, which works with leading retailers across all regions.

In the past year, a whole host of suppliers, both independent software vendors (ISVs) and firms also supplying hardware, rolled out their solutions to new customers or supported existing clients as they expanded. These include Aptos and subsidiary LS Retail, Extenda Retail, GEBIT Solutions, JumpMind, PAR and QubePOS.

Demand for new solutions to remain high

More than a third of new POS software installations in the year to June 2024 were the result of a change in supplier. As leading retail and hospitality firms seek more efficient operations and exceptional customer experience through unified commerce strategies, it is expected that competition for new business will only intensify.
