Competition in the growing self-checkout market remains fierce

Self-checkout shipments reach record levels as the market sees a further proliferation of suppliers and solutions

More than fifty self-checkout suppliers compete globally

Activity in the global self-checkout market marked a new high in 2023, according to Global EPOS and Self-Checkout, a study from strategic research and consulting firm RBR Data Services, a division of Datos Insights. The brand-new research reveals more than 217,000 terminals delivered during the year.

Both the range of suppliers and types of solution available have expanded rapidly in recent years, creating a diverse, highly competitive and increasingly fragmented market; the study found more than 50 vendors across the world.

NCR Voyix leads the market; Diebold Nixdorf moves into second

NCR Voyix remains the largest supplier of self-checkout terminals worldwide, delivering around 63,000 units in 2023. Leading in the Americas, and with a strong presence in Europe, the vendorโ€™s customers include retail giant Walmart in multiple countries, a range of US fuel convenience chains, as well as major grocery firms including Polandโ€™s Biedronka and the UKโ€™s Morrisons.

Meanwhile, Diebold Nixdorf became the second largest supplier globally. Customers include major supermarket chains in the UK and France, while discount firm Aldi continues to roll out the vendorโ€™s terminals in markets from Australia to the USA.

Toshiba rounds out the three largest suppliers of self-checkout technology globally. The vendor is the leading provider to Japan, supplying convenience store chains, and has a strong US presence with terminals at CVS drugstores and Albertsons supermarkets.

Local and regional suppliers compete with international firms

Chinese vendors HiStone, CCL Technology and Wintec are the largest suppliers to their home market and continue to expand overseas. HiStone has a strong presence in Chile, while CCL Technology counts French grocery chain Bi1 among its customers. Wintec is supplying retailers across multiple countries including in Israel and Poland.

The market is continuing to fragment, with local and regional firms also winning business. Swiss vendor 4POS has gained share in western Europe, with customers including grocery chain REWE across several countries. Meanwhile, retailers in Brazil are largely working with domestic suppliers, including Laurenti and Perto.

Additionally, some retailers, including Home Depot, have rolled out proprietary self-checkout solutions, put together using technology from a range of different vendors.

Vendors look to new technology to serve under-penetrated sectors

The growing demand for self-checkout has opened up new opportunities for suppliers, with both kiosk and EPOS manufacturers increasingly offering self-checkout solutions. Other firms look to target currently under-penetrated sectors; for example, Mashginโ€™s computer vision-based solution is in use in fuel convenience stores and sports stadia, where customers typically look for a โ€œgrab and goโ€ experience.

With an increasing range of self-checkout solutions available to suit retailersโ€™ specific needs, RBR Data Services is forecasting global shipments to top 370,000 by 2029.
