The debit card remains the payment method British consumers reach for first. It sits at the heart of the primary banking relationship for the vast majority of U.K. consumers, relied upon for everyday transactions from the pub to the supermarket to the High Street. Unlike credit cards or newer digital payment methods, the debit card embodies a distinctly British approach to money: the preference for spending what exists in the account rather than borrowing against a future repayment. It is less a payment device than a philosophy, and that philosophy has proven durable even as fintech has reshaped the financial landscape.

This report covers account-opening trends associated with debit cards, outlining consumer adoption rates, financial institution selection drivers, and key demographics and preferences of debit cardholders. It is based on a study among 4,864 consumers in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. that Datos Insights conducted in Q1 to Q2 2025.
